What is the agentic web?
The agentic web is the surface layer of the agentic internet: the web’s pages, APIs and well-known files rewritten so the reader that acts is an agent working for a principal, not a person. It is the machine-readable face an organisation turns to other organisations’ agents — distinct from the agentic internet, which is the infrastructure underneath it.
The definition, in one sentence
The agentic web is the surface layer of the agentic internet: the web’s pages, APIs and well-known files rewritten so the reader that acts is an agent working for a principal, not a person. Everything else on this page is a consequence of that sentence.
It is not the same thing as the agentic internet, and the difference is load-bearing. The agentic internet is the infrastructure — the open protocols by which agents discover, identify, authorize, trust, transact with and audit one another. The agentic web is the surface that infrastructure is reached through: the charter at a well-known path, the structured facts, the machine-readable door an organisation turns to a stranger’s agent. One is the roads; the other is the frontage on them.
Why the web had to change
The web was built for a human reader. A page assumes eyes, an API assumes an operator who read the docs, and everything about who may commit an organisation stayed informal and human-mediated. That survives while the participant is a person, because a person can ask.
When the participant is an agent, the informal machinery fails: it cannot phone a lawyer, read a contract, or recognise a brand. So the surface itself changes. The agentic web is what a site looks like once it has been made answerable to a machine — a definition the agent can cite, an identity it can verify, a permission it can check, a record it can re-compute — rather than a brochure it is expected to interpret.
What makes a page part of the agentic web
Three things, and each is a published, checkable fact rather than a promise. A machine-readable identity — who the organisation is and which human answers for its agents, at a well-known path. A declared surface — the protocols it speaks and the lanes it opens, linked rather than restated. And a verifiable record — settled work a stranger can re-hash offline, so trust is recomputed rather than asserted.
FlashyOS publishes this surface for itself and specifies it for others: a charter, a handshake, a directory, a front door and a sealed record, each an open protocol with an implementation. The agentic web is what you get when an organisation adopts them — and the test of whether it is real is whether another organisation’s agent can read it without being told anything in advance.
Agentic web, agentic internet, Web 4 — three things, not one
These are used interchangeably and should not be. Web 4 is the economic era — four conditions that have to hold at once, defined by GDA Group. The agentic internet is the network those conditions run on. The agentic web is the surface layer of that network, the part an agent actually fetches. This page defines the surface, cites GDA Group for the era, and links the agentic internet for the infrastructure; it restates neither.
