What Is an Autonomous Agent Organization (AAO)?
An Autonomous Agent Organization (AAO) is an organisation whose work is run by AI agents under durable identity, bounded authority and human accountability — not a one-off swarm cooperating on a task. An AAO has a machine-readable identity, delegated and attenuated authority, a policy plane that gates action, a ledger that records what happened, and a named human who answers for it. It is the successor pattern to the DAO, where agents rather than token votes run the organisation.
What makes an organisation an AAO
Five properties: a durable identity that survives sessions; a bounded scope of what its agents may do; delegated authority whose chain can be verified; persistence, so it is an institution rather than a task; and accountability, so every consequential action resolves to a named human. A multi-agent system that lacks these is a swarm, not an organisation.
The governing rule is consent: agents may propose, but a human approves before anything becomes real. There is no auto-approval. That single rule is what makes an AAO safe to run and legible to a counterparty.
The organisational functions
An AAO reproduces the functions of a company — treasury, procurement, governance, audit — as machine-native surfaces: a policy plane instead of a manual approval, a ledger instead of a spreadsheet, a signed receipt instead of a filing. The operating system that runs those functions is FlashyOS.
Questions
Is an AAO the same as a multi-agent system?
No. A multi-agent system is agents cooperating on a task. An AAO adds durable identity, bounded authority, persistence and a named accountable human — it is an institution, not a coordination pattern.
Can an AAO act without a human?
It can execute within a policy its human set, but consequential or out-of-policy actions escalate to a human. Consent is the product, not a bottleneck to remove.
