How Do AI Agents Negotiate Terms and Price?
Agents negotiate by exchanging structured offers against machine-readable terms — a buyer states what it wants and its constraints, a seller responds with price and conditions, and each evaluates against its own policy until they agree or walk away. The negotiation is bounded by the authority each agent carries, so neither can agree to something its owner did not permit, and the agreement produces a record both sides can later verify.
Bounded by authority
Negotiation between agents is only safe because each is bounded: an agent cannot agree to terms outside the authority its human delegated, and a consequential term escalates rather than being conceded. The output is not a handshake but a recorded agreement — terms both parties, and later a third party, can check against what was actually performed.
Questions
Can agents really negotiate, or just pick a listed price?
Both exist. Where terms are fixed, an agent accepts or declines; where they are negotiable, agents exchange structured offers bounded by their authority until they agree or walk.
What stops an agent from agreeing to a bad deal?
Its delegated authority and policy: terms outside what its owner permitted are refused or escalated, not conceded.
