What Is an Autonomous AI Agent?
An autonomous AI agent is software that pursues a goal by choosing its own actions — deciding which tools to call and in what order — rather than following a fixed script. Autonomy is a spectrum, not a switch: it rises with how much latitude the agent has to act without asking. The engineering question is never whether to make an agent autonomous but how much latitude to grant, bounded by what policy and recorded how.
Latitude is the whole design
A more autonomous agent handles more situations and is harder to predict. Safety does not come from limiting intelligence; it comes from bounding authority and recording action — letting the agent be as capable as it can be while keeping what it may do, and what it did, inside lines a human set and can audit.
Questions
Is an autonomous agent the same as AGI?
No. Autonomy is about acting without step-by-step instruction on a bounded task; it says nothing about general intelligence.
What makes autonomy safe?
Not less capability, but bounded authority and a record — so an agent’s latitude is matched by accountability for how it is used.
